Free NHS Blood Pressure Checks in Acocks Green

Blood pressure being taken with a cuff on the upper arm

High blood pressure has no symptoms

That is the whole problem with it. High blood pressure does not make you feel unwell, which is why around a third of people who have it do not know. Left untreated over years it raises the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney disease.

A check takes about five minutes and is free on the NHS for adults aged 40 and over.

What happens

The pharmacist takes your blood pressure with a cuff on your upper arm, usually twice, with a short rest beforehand because rushing in from outside can push the reading up.

You are told the numbers, what they mean, and what happens next. A normal reading means come back in a few years. A raised reading may mean a repeat check, or a referral to your GP.

24-hour monitoring

Some people read high at the pharmacy and normal at home — so-called white coat hypertension. Where that is a possibility, 24-hour ambulatory monitoring gives a far more accurate picture. Ask us about it.
