
That is the whole problem with it. High blood pressure does not make you feel unwell, which is why around a third of people who have it do not know. Left untreated over years it raises the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney disease.
A check takes about five minutes and is free on the NHS for adults aged 40 and over.
The pharmacist takes your blood pressure with a cuff on your upper arm, usually twice, with a short rest beforehand because rushing in from outside can push the reading up.
You are told the numbers, what they mean, and what happens next. A normal reading means come back in a few years. A raised reading may mean a repeat check, or a referral to your GP.
Some people read high at the pharmacy and normal at home — so-called white coat hypertension. Where that is a possibility, 24-hour ambulatory monitoring gives a far more accurate picture. Ask us about it.
