NHS Contraception at the Pharmacy: Start or Continue the Pill

What the service covers

Pharmacists can now start you on the oral contraceptive pill, or continue a supply you are already taking, free on the NHS. You do not need a GP appointment and you do not need to have used the pharmacy before.

It covers both combined and progestogen-only pills.

What the consultation involves

You are seen privately in the consultation room. The pharmacist takes a brief medical history, checks your blood pressure and weight where relevant, and talks through which options are suitable for you.

If everything is appropriate, you leave with a supply. If something in your history means the pill is not the right choice, you will be referred and told clearly why.

Emergency contraception

We also supply emergency contraception. It is more effective the sooner it is taken, so if you need it, come in rather than waiting — and note that we are open until 9pm Monday to Saturday and 8pm on Sunday, including weekends when surgeries are closed.

The conversation happens privately, not at the counter.

Confidentiality

Everything discussed is confidential and handled in the same way as any other consultation with a healthcare professional.
